General Akbar was commissioned from Pakistan Military Academy with 47 PMA L/C in 1971, in the Corps of Infantry. He served in various capacities, including command, staff, and instructional appointments. In his illustrious career, he commanded three infantry battalions, two infantry brigades, and an infantry division.

Under the UN umbrella, he served as Force Commander of United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) from 2004 to 2006 and led the first Bangladeshi Peacekeeping Observers’ Team to United Nations Iran and Iraq Military Observers Group (UNIIMOG) in 1988.
